Home Carryover
Each week I have the opportunity to meet with your child for a very limited amount of time, and we use each precious minute to practice the skills as outlined in their IEP. While your child and I put in our best efforts here at school, we can't do it all alone! We need the support of family and friends to encourage carryover of newly learned skills.
On a regular basis (weekly) you can expect your child to bring home a yellow quarter-slip of paper titled "Speech-Language Homework." This is a way for me to easily communicate to you what your child has been working on during our sessions together. For each student, I will write a quick synopsis of the week's targets (working on the /k/ sound at the beginning of words, using regular past tense verbs in sentences, etc.). In addition, I will also provide some short, simple ways your child can practice the skills we worked on at home. If we are practicing a target sound, I may jot down 5 words that we used throughout the week. If we have been working on taking turns, I may request that you play a game at home to continue the practice. I will never send home any "homework" that I think your child will be unsuccessful with. I want this to be a fun and easy activity for them, not something that they struggle with.
While this homework does not need to be "returned" and will not be "graded" like traditional homework, I will offer some incentive to those students who regularly report to me that they have done their practice over the weekend.
